Because He Was A Bonny Lad

This is a traditional pipe tune with Northumbrian and Scottish versions, and variously listed as a rant, polka, strathspey or reel. It's also used as the air for a folk song of the same name (as recorded by The Unthanks). The great Kathryn Tickell has an impossibly charming home recording from her kitchen here.

My instrumental recording on mandolin and tenor guitar is based on Paul Hardy's tunebook:

Very nice Martin, sounds like there were some challenges with note values, which you nailed, but I think the composer put them in just to scare people away.

Well played, Matin. Thanks for the link to Kathtryn Tickell's home recording.

    Thanks, Ginny and Frithjof!

It's a pipe tune, which tend to be rhythmically complex. The version I've played is Scottish rather than Northumbrian, so its rhythm is a bit spikier than Kathryn Tickell plays it, with lots of Scotch snaps.

    Thanks again Martin.

Be aware that the orig. K. Tickell version was in F, this is in D (much easier) Will post key of F if I get time later tonight. Enjoy!

With accompaniment, I thought I’d cheer myself up with this lovely tune.
Still some work to do on those triplets etc, but the idea’s there.

Missed this one back in January, Martin. Great tune, and thanks for the link to Kathryn's beautiful kitchen recording. Your two versions are indeed quite different.

Simon, your YouTube link has failed - you need to re-enter it.

How’s that now? It was a blanc white square for me a while ago.
I went for the Katheryn Tickell version which really is a pipe tune, there are a couple of finger busters in there, even with the key change and of course she plays it even faster on the pipes, and there’s the hesitant rhythm that she puts in.

Nice one, Simon! I also like the sound of your local church bells. They have a very nice timbre.

Thanks Dennis, this is the only tune out of the whole 95 complete, without key repetition, register or revisited tunes than I have done so far where there’s a pick movement that runs opposite to the flow. I found it really difficult to do and still keep the main flow going. And now interestingly sometimes my pick hand will jump and squeeze that note in in the ‘right’ direction. It’s like a triplet of five notes where the fourth and fifth notes have the full length and the right pick direction -I’m sure the music theorists among us could explain it better.
