Click Go The Shears / Constitution Hornpipe

This is a brief set of two traditional tunes, both arranged by Evelyn Tiffany-Castiglioni from the wonderful "Evelyn's Big Book for Mandolins for the year 2017" (available from Amazon, NFI).

Playing them as a set is somewhat serendipidous: as Evelyn's book is arranged alphabetically, these two tunes are on consecutive pages and as they are also in the same key and rhythm, going straight from one to the other was easy and painless. It think they go very nicely together!

"Click Go The Shears" is a well-known Australian folk song, originally published as a parody (and to the tune of) an American Civil War song, "Ring The Bell, Watchman" by Henry Clay. The tune has the rhythm of a schottische. I first came across the tune sung by Martyn Wyndham-Read with A.L. Lloyd on the 1971 album "The Great Australian Legend".

    "Constitution Hornpipe"
is an American dance tune. It has been suggested the title refers to the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides"), the oldest commissioned vessel in the US Navy, rather than the actual Constitution. It's quite a tricky tune to play, especially the B part.
