This week's runaway winner is Big Mon, which was submitted as a Bill Monroe tune.

I'm not familiar with this tune. Here's what I've found; if anyone has any other links that would be great!

Here's notation and abc from abcnotation.com

Here's a link to the tune being discussed on Mandolin Cafe in the Bluegrass section.

Here's a link to some notation and tab

I found this You Tube video.....

Wow, fast playing. And as always, a lot slower can be just as nice. I think sometimes even nicer
I found this pretty version of Bill Macy

  3. OldSausage
    How about Andy Leftwich:

  4. Rob Fowler
    Rob Fowler
    Or maybe some Mike Compton?

Or gosh, why not 3 "ok" mandolin pickers playing it: Marshall, Thile, and McCoury!

  5. luurtie
Yes Rob, the last three pickers are "ok". I have something to work on this weekend, it's a nice tune...
  6. GKWilson
Does anyone have the Tabs for that last video.
I have a few extra minutes tonight that I could work on it.
  7. luurtie
Here's what I did this morning with a simplified version . I used my zoom H1 recorder, relaxed playing on the couch

Nice luurtie. I wish my final product would sound like your early 'simplified version'
  9. Marcelyn
That's a terrific arrangement, Hendrik. I love your choice of tempo too.

I agree with Marcelyn! I especially liked the nice syncopation in the second part.

    Nicely played Luurtie. sounds good
  12. MandoManCaleb

Here's mine! I've been super busy and need to catch up on the past couple of weeks! Sounding great Lurrtie!
  13. luurtie
Your fingers are way too fast for your camera Caleb. You sound like a pro, or even better if that's possible.
Now you know what I ment with simplified version Manfred, although thanks for all the compliments all of you.
  14. jonny250
Waay to go Caleb! sounds good

    Mighty fine!
  17. Frankdolin
Nice versions guys! This is my take so far

Frankdolin.... nice playing, and reflections in bodies of water are one of my favorite things to photograph!
  19. GKWilson
Very nice Frankdolin. Has a very country sound going.
Also, a very nice 'simple' version luurtie. That's my kind of pace.
Caleb, you need to slow down. You'll wear your fingers out before your 30.
Kidding aside. Wow. I think you were evoking the power of Sam Bush again. Nice.
  20. jonny250
Very nice Frankdolin nice images too.
I'm off to England tomorrow for a week of tuition [Sore Fingers course] with Jesse Cobb, really looking forward to it. Doing my research, i cam across this video of Jesse - at about 1:50 he is playing Big Mon. Worth listening to!!!

There weren't a lot of posts this week, but everyone that did post was exceptional. I enjoyed working on this one, but had trouble getting something decent recorded.
  22. Frankdolin
Nice job Laura...I liked the banjo on the backbeat, very cool!
  23. GKWilson
Nice take Laura. I started learning the first part last weekend, but got sidetracked.
This tune takes more than a few days to learn. And, a lifetime to perfect.
Jonny, I'm sure your fingers will be sore if you try to keep up with Jesse.
Have fun. I'll be spending 4 days with John Reischman and Sharon Gilchrist next week.
John taught at 'Sore Fingers' a year or two ago.
I don't know how much I can learn from Sharon.
If I were thirty years younger I'd probably be a groupie. [probably more like a stalker]
  24. Marcelyn
You guys are all extra impressive this week. Here's a second for the great banjo backup Laura. What a week to jump in on Frank--great picking. And Caleb, Wow!
