Rolfe - How did you come to build a Novax scale instrument? Did you uncover any nuances or anything unusual during the build? What are your daughter's thoughts about the instrument? Greg
Hi Greg, At the time I was starting to build the Phoenix mandolins, after almost ten years of not building, I wanted to come back with all the technical improvements that had developed over the last decade; the Novax system was one of them. I thought that the A strings were just right, Es needed a little more brightness, Ds and Gs could use more bass, so that's what Ralph Novak worked out for my fingerboards. I thought it was an improvement, but the market likes straight frets. Elderly sold one; my daughter and my mandolin teacher got the other two. She is a talented musician but hasn't been playing much and doesn't have anything to compare it to, so she will be happy enough when I build her another, regular fretted, instrument further down the road. Thanks for asking.
