I've been lurking on Mando Cafe for about 18 months, but am trying to be more proactive. I love playing/singing gospel. Have done so on lap dulcimer and guitar, but have just started working on it on mando. A few of my favorite gospel tunes in no particular order. I'll Fly Away Blessed Jesus Hold My Hand The Old Churchyard Little Mountain Church House Send the Light Angel Band (love the Peasall Sisters redention!) Hi all, Our little Bluegrass gospel group has been playing old time gospel tunes many of which have been mentioned here but two I didn't see are Poor Wayfaring Stranger and Light at the River. Best, D
Wayfaring stranger is great. I do this song in A Minor.
Does anyone have tab for some of these songs that they would like to share? The easier the better, 'cuz I'm kinda new at this whole mandolin thing. Thanks!
I hope someone posts the tab/chords/lyrics for these... I know you can find stuff at Chordie.com and have it marked up for mandolin. I'm just beginning, so I only know about 4-5 chords and am using the Mandolin Basics and Beyond DVD to learn. I've played guitar for over 40 yrs and it seems like the intervals for mandolins are easier to understand.
At the nursing home where I play guitar on Saturdays Mansion over the Hilltop and Jesus Loves Me are popular. On mandolin, I am working on Wayfaring Stranger and Oh How I Love Jesus.
Here's a few of the songs our group plays. No Not One I Love to Tell the Story No Distinction In the Garden Never Grow Old He Set Me Free You Can't Stand Up Alone The River of Jordan
These are all wonderful songs, wow! I play on Fridays at a retirement home and most of my pieces are gospel songs. I don't always play well, but I'm doing my best. They're just glad someone took the time to come out and play. Good practice for me. I've got some new material to go look up now with all these suggestions! A song I just started learning is Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. I know it's a Christmas song, but, I'll have it ready for Next Year! And I'm working on Greensleeves too.
Dunno if the name is 'this world is not my home'....or....'I can't feel at home in this world anymore... In the Garden Peace in the Valley Angel Band

Crisscross...is your name Chris Anyhow....LOVED your rendition of "What a Friend We Have In Jesus"
Just posted a thread for "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" with a very simple rendition I did today. Maybe some of you can post your rendition on it. I'm sure I'd LOVE that! and others would too! Karon
Thanks Karon. Actually, my name is Christian, wich is kind of common here in Germany. I got the idea for this tune from the Dan Levensons clawhammer gospel book. Just the right stuff for a mediocre banjoist like myself. It contains about 30 gospel tunes with melody line, lyrics for one verse and clawhammer banjo tab. Another tune that I like is "Just a closer walk with thee". Although most often, you hear Oldtime-Jazz -renditions it works well in a bluegrass kind of feeling: https://soundcloud.com/tele1310/just...walk-with-thee
Here are a few songs I play frequently in local Gospel jams. John The Revelator Three Men on a Mountain Old Crossroads Let Me Walk Lord (By Your Side) House of Gold
