Boulder, Colorado mandolinist Bella Betts joins us this week for an original song on her Collings mandolin.
Though just 16 years old, Bella has been making waves in the acoustic music scene for quite some time now. Known for her mature mandolin playing and songwriting, she has gained the attention and praise of such artists as Aoife O’Donovan, David Grisman, Sarah Jarosz, Sierra Hull, and Chris Thile. In 2012, Bella released her first CD, Lights Around A Curve, produced by Steve Szymanski (co-founder of Planet Bluegrass). And in 2015, Bella, at 14 years old, became the youngest member to attend Mike Marshall's Acoustic Music Seminar.
Here's Bella with a word about the song in this video: "This is an original song of mine called "What Do We Pass On." I wrote it early last year, and it's one of my favorites to play because you can really mess with the groove and it also has a bluesy, gritty element."
Most recently, Bella has been working on a visual album in partnership with a professional dance company, The Schiff Dance Collective, this fall. There will soon be a Kickstarter Campaign to fund the project. Keep in touch for more news at the following links:
