Returning to Mandolin Mondays this week, we have Alan Epstein with us playing the old classic "Soldier's Joy" on his brand new Gilchrist Model 4 #841 mandolin.
Alan appeared on Mandolin Mondays 6 years ago to the day, and since then he's been busy teaching and playing the mandolin, and cooking! In June of 2021, after 25 years of being an active mandolin teacher, Alan took a 1 year break to go to Culinary School but is now back teaching and playing music again. He's been offering in-person mandolin classes at the Caffe Lena Music School in Saratoga Springs. His next mandolin classes are being planned for this Fall and will be announced here: https://www.caffelena.org/music-school/
He'll also be offering a free 1 hour online workshop on April 18 titled "So you want to play the mandolin" on Lessonsface. You can signup for the free workshop here: https://www.lessonface.com/apply/so-...lay-mandolin-1
Or you can signup for online 1x1 lessons with Alan on Lessonface here

Here's a word from Alan about this video and his new axe, "I first heard a Gilchrist mandolin in 1987 when I attended the week long Augusta Heritage Bluegrass week in Elkins, WV where Mike Compton and the other members of the Nashville Bluegrass band were teaching. The clarity of the Gilchrist sound always stuck with me and years later, after hearing Mike's Model 4, I contacted Steve Gilchrist and inquired about ordering a Model 4 with a similar sound. My Model 4 #841 was included as a part of the 2022 batch and it arrived in January of this year. The tone, quick response, workmanship and playability of the mandolin far exceeded my expectations. It's only a few months old, but it is sounding better and more alive every day. The tune I chose to play is "Soldiers Joy," I believe it's a good one to introduce #841 to everyone."
