Mandolin Mondays #349 w/ Special Guest Danny Knicely

Rate this Entry
Returning to Mandolin Mondays we have Danny Knicely with us, this time with a vintage Kalamazoo Mandocello paying tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II with a beautiful performance of the Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn composition "Single Petal of a Rose" that was composed in honor of the Queen.

If you're new to his amazing music, Danny is a multi-talented musician and music producer from the Shenandoah valley of Virginia. He is constantly active performing and recording his own music and working with other musicians and dancers. Danny has won many awards for his mandolin, guitar, fiddle and flat-foot dance expertise, including first place in the mandolin contest at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival. His masterful mandolinistry and original compositions can be heard on his debut recording “Roots and Branches” and his colorful, versatile, acoustic guitar picking can be heard on his "Waltz for Aimee” album. Also, Danny is an avid music educator whose students have gone on to attain degrees at institutions such as Berklee College of Music and Oberlin Conservatory. He has also taught at some of the leading music camps in the U.S. including Augusta Heritage Center, Common Ground on the Hill, Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, and Millwood Blues Week.

Here's a quote from Danny about this video, "'The Single Petal of a Rose' is part of 'The Queens Suite' and was written for Queen Elizabeth II by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Only one record was made and presented to the Queen. It was many years later that the piece was released for the public to hear."
