This week on Mandolin Mondays we're joined by lefty South Carolina mandolinist Milom Williams II of the band Backline. Check out his rendition of the Wayne Benson tune "Wintergrass" played on his Gray Fern F-5 mandolin.
After starting guitar lessons at 8, Milom picked up the mandolin around 12. When he was 17 he started taking lessons from Wayne Benson, and joined his first full-time band at 18. Kevin Richardson and Cuttin' Edge, Nu-Blu, The King James Boys, and (currently) Backline are the bands he's toured with, and he's known to have also been spotted making appearances with The Rochester's, The Gospel Plowboys, Darren Beachley, Skip Cherryholmes, and Volume Five.
Here's a word from Milom about the mandolin in this video, "The mandolin I'm playing is a Gray Fern F-5, with a callback to an early 1920's red/orange color that was used by Gibson. It was custom built for me in 2012 by Johnny Gray from Corbin, KY. I'm also endorsed by Gray for mandolin and guitar (he also made a D-35 and D-18 for us)."
