Mandolin Mondays #273 w/ Special Guest Flynn Cohen

Rating: 1 votes, 5.00 average.
A bit of novelty on Mandolin Mondays this week! Multi-instrumentalist Flynn Cohen of Low Lily joins us for an original microtonal fiddle tune called "The Last of Biff" played on his modified vintage Gibson mandolin that has two partial-frets and one micro-tuned course.

Acoustic Guitar and mandolin player Flynn Cohen has performed all over the world with many notable acts in traditional and contemporary acoustic music. He can be seen in concert with the American folk band LOW LILY (formerly known as Annalivia), and legendary Irish Accordion player John Whelan, as well as duo shows playing music from his four solo albums.

Flynn also teaches Irish backup guitar over on Peghead Nation and Patreon. Be sure to check out his instructional videos here: https://www.pegheadnation.com/string...rs/flynn-cohen

Microtonal has to grow on you a bit, but it does! Great job Flynn!

    Love this tune.

Anyone know of lessons for this particular tune?

This is by far the most interesting entry in this series so far. Yes, it takes a bit of an adjustment to start hearing it as not simply out of tune, but it's totally worth it on the other end! I love how what is a pretty straight forward fiddle tune can really expand your ears to the possibilities that exist beyond 12 tone equal temperament.

Yes, great tune. A haunting Appalachian mode to me. Can anyone tell me what a partial fret is?
