Mandolin Mondays #266 w/ Special Guest Steve Gilchrist

Rating: 2 votes, 4.50 average.
This week on Mandolin Mondays, premier mandolin luthier Steve Gilchrist takes us on a tour of his workshop in Lake Gnotuk, Australia for a taste test of a restored April 12, 1923 Lloyd Loar alongside one of Steve's own Model 5's from 2017.

Steve is perhaps one of the most well known and respected luthiers in the greater mandolin community. With some of the most notable mandolin players in the world sporting his instruments, his works speaks for itself. Yet, not only is he a master craftsman, his mandolin playing is among the best as well.

Here's a word from Steve about the tune he is sampling in this video, "The tune is one I made-up called "Gnotuky", named after the lake we live on here called Lake Gnotuk. It doesn't sound like a lake, I know..."

For anyone interested, Steve takes orders for new mandolins through the Carter Vintage website here: https://cartervintage.com/

Well, this was a pleasant surprise! Thank you David, and Steve. It’s obvious from Steve’s tune why he and M.C. seem to be on much of the same wave length.

Beautiful mandolins, a haunting new melody that sounds like it was first played far up a lonely hollow long ago, and the master’s touch and tone that bring instruments and melody vividly to life.

Just wonderful, both the instruments - old and new - and Steve's beautiful, soulful playing of them. What a treat. Thank you for sharing, Steve.

Such fun to be able to hear the Old vs New comparison - I'd be glad to have either - both played well by a true artist. Bravo!
