Mandolin Mondays #258 w/ Special Guest Calum McIlroy

Rate this Entry
Check out Calum McIlroy from Glasgow, Scotland playing a beautiful piece composed by Hugh Campbell, and played on a lovely 2018 Taran Springwell mandolin, built by Rory Dowling in Fife.

Calum McIlroy is a multi-instrumentalist and singer from Aberdeenshire in the North East of Scotland. He began playing the guitar at a young age and by the time he left school he had discovered a passion for folk music, and a new-found interest in the mandolin.

In 2016, Calum moved to Glasgow to study a BMus in Traditional Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and in 2020, he graduated with first class honours. During his time at the conservatoire he was tutored by acclaimed musicians such as Ali Hutton, Fiona Hunter, Rod Paterson, Innes Watson, and Kevin MacKenzie. He began to carve out his signature style of flat-picking and intricate song accompaniment, and he started his own trio, with Megan MacDonald and Ruairidh Gollan.

Here's a word from Calum about the piece in this video, "I’m playing a 2/4 pipe march, Hugh Alexander Low of Tiree, which was written by Hugh Campbell, and I learned it from a volume of the Scots Guards Standard Settings of Pipe Music books. I learned it with my partner at the piano in her family’s house in Oban."

You can contact him for a copy of the transcription for this video at his website here: https://www.calummcilroy.com/home

Calum also has just release a brand new debut EP called This Ill Deeds, and the code “mondays” can be used on his site for 20% off CDs and the other transcriptions that he has.

I liked it even better the second time through, and while I was focused on that lovely mandolin sound, I could still hear the pipes coming through at times.
