Mandolin player of British Bluegrass band The Often Herd, Evan Davies joins us this week on Mandolin Mondays for a modern take on this old time tune played on his Lebeda F5 Standard.
Evan is a Yorkshire-based musician known for his proficiency on the mandolin, guitar and fiddle, and for his soulful singing and songwriting. He has toured around the UK and Europe and played at festivals including Edinburgh Fringe, SummerTyne Americana. Along the way, he has supported Grammy winning/nominated artists such as Tim O'Brien, Sarah Jarosz and Yola Carter.
Evan is also known as one of the founding members of The Often Herd--one of the UK's most exciting and inventive bluegrass/americana artists. Check out the band's most recent EP here: https://open.spotify.com/album/2mBob...RqGS2d61pFL2zA
Here's a word from Evan about this video, "The tune is Julianne Johnson, not much to say about it really! I learnt it on fiddle from Jock Tyldesley and when I took it over to mandolin, a little bass line jumped out at me, so I worked up a few chord/melody ideas into this arrangement. My mandolin is a Lebeda F5 Standard, made by Jiři Lebeda in 2005 (I think, based on the serial number) in Czech Republic. That's about as much as I know about it I'm afraid! I've had her for almost 7 years and she's a beaut."
