Swedish mandolinist Oskar Reuter stops by Mandolin Mondays this week to play some original Swedish folk music on his lovely Vaņa F5 Master Model built by Miroslav Vana in 2012.



Oskar Reuter is a prolific musician and educator based in Gothenburg, Sweden. His main focus musically is Nordic traditional and contemporary music, and can be found playing guitar, cittern, nyckelharpa, in addition to the mandolin.

Over the years, Oskar has played different instruments in numerous Swedish folk bands. Most recently he's been playing nyckelharpa in a duo called Oskar & Jonathan. Here's a word from Oskar about the composition and mandolin in this video, "The tune is called 'Arpeggiopolskan' and I wrote it a couple of years ago when I needed a tune to practice arpeggios in 3/4 and not in 4/4 meter. I play on a Vaņa F5 Master Model and I love it! Its a wonderful F-style mandolin built by Czech master luthier Miroslav Vaņa. The mandolin has a Adirondack (red spruce) top and American red maple back and sides.

    Nicely played, Oskar. Great tone and touch. Check out that left hand work position next to the fingerboard, folks. That's how it's supposed to be done.

    A good piece, well played, of course. Thanks. I'm curious about the sound: impressive tone and sustain, how much of this is due to electronic pickup vs. mandolin acoustics? If I put a pickup on one of my mandos, would I be surprised by tone and sustain?

    Excellent video. Also super excited to find another nyckelharpa player to listen to. The 'Panna mot Panna' album is just fantastic.

    Oskar, thank you for the beautiful piece of music.

    I really love music of Oskar's trio called Indiefolktrion.
    They say about themselves that they play original energetic, melodic and playful music with elements of traditional Swedish music, improvisation, baroque and pop.
    The trio consist of Oskar on the mandolin, Erik Dahl on the piano and Viktor Turegård on Double Bass.
    They recorded an album called 'Indiefolk' a few years ago.
    By the way Oskar plays this particular 2012 Váňa F5 Master Mandolin on the album.

    As I remember the tonal qualities of this mandolin when I tried in in person I'm quite sure this is natural acoustic tone of the instrument (that there is no pickup or any sort of sustainer used on the recording). Am I right, Oskar? Would you please share with us what equipment did you use to record it? Thank you!

    I received a few messages from the people who were confused so I will write it also here to make this clear: this IS the natural tone of this mandolin. It's confirmed! Powerful, concrete and rich with plenty of natural sustain. NO pickup was used.
