This week on Mandolin Mondays Mandolin Rajesh, one of the premier mandolinist of India, graces us with a beautiful improvisation over his brother U. Shrinivas' composition with his custom 5-string electric mandolin.
Uppalapu Rajesh aka "Mandolin Rajesh" is an Indian mandolin player in Carnatic classical music, a music producer and a composer. He is one of the most sought after classical artists currently in India, having played with nearly all of the top musical stars in both north and south India and recorded over a dozen albums. He is the younger brother of U. Shrinivas, the notable mandolin player in Carnatic classical music in India.
He and his brother have performed in concerts together, and have released musical albums together. Rajesh is one of the directors of the music school, Shrinivas Institute of World Music (SIOWM), Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which is providing free musical tuition to the students.
Here's a word from Rajesh about this video, "The mandolin I play is a 5 strings electric which was designed specifically for playing Indian classical music by my brother U Shrinivas . He was the first person to adapt this instrument in to the South Indian classical music. The song name is 'Samjanitha' written by U Shrinivas but I improvised it."
