Mandolin Mondays #174 w/ Special Guest Mike Guggino

Rating: 1 votes, 5.00 average.
Steep Canyon Rangers resident mandolin powerhouse Mike Guggino slays this original tune on his incredible Lloyd Loar.

Mike has been tearing up the scene with the Rangers for over a decade now. Perhaps best known for their work with comedian Steve Martin, they've also won Entertainer of the Year from IBMA in 2011 and earned widespread critical acclaim. Here Mike talks about the tune and mandolin in this video, "This is an original tune called "Monroni Mandolin". It combines my two favorite styles of mandolin playing: Monroe downstroke and Italian folk. The inspiration for the tune (and the name) came from a comment a fan made to me after a show in North Carolina several years ago. A man walked up to me after our set and said "you play that mandolin pretty good for a good ol' I-talian boy. Sounds like Bill Monroni!" I thought it was hilarious! I immediately wanted to write a tune that blended the two styles. I am playing a July 9,1923 Gibson F-5 Mastermodel."

Beautiful playing! What is the serial number of this beautiful Lloyd Loar mandolin, please? Does it have a Virzi? According to the sound I suppose it does not. Many thanks.

Mike is killer at Monroe style and traditional Italian tunes, so this cool mashup makes sense! Following SCR for 15+ years now and having lessons with Mike when I was first getting started, I can say he's a heck of a guy as well!

Nice tune! At one time, he was playing/borrowing Steve Martin's Loar. Not sure, but I believe that was a different mando. To my ear, on the computer speakers, I'm guessing this one has a Virzi.

    Care to clarify Mike? Thanks
