Mandolin Mondays #166 w/ Special Guest Eva Holbrook

Rate this Entry
This week on Mandolin Mondays we're graced with a tune from the impeccable Eva Holbrook of Shel and Lady Moon. She can really make that Weber Beartooth sing!

Originally from Ft. Collins, CO, Eva has been playing music from a young age. She and her 3 sisters formed the genre-bending acoustic band SHEL that over the years has been met with a cult following and critical acclaim. Check out their most recent release Just Crazy Enough: https://www.shelmusic.com/#store-section

In addition to SHEL, Eva has recently struck out on her own with her new solo project called Lady Moon. She's exploring the many different worlds of folk music with her mandolin and guitar and sharing the results on social media and youtube. Be sure to check out her work at the links below.

Here's a word from Eva about the tune in this video, "I came across this jig in my study of O’Neils Music Of Ireland, and here lent my own ornamentation and picking interpretation to Kevin Allison’s transcription. I particularly love this piece because it conjures visions of dancing fairies."

I started playing Irish tunes on the mandolin a few years ago, and even though I will never be able to play a tenth this good, Eva Holbrook's playing of this jig re-convinces me I'm playing the right music on the right instrument. Thank you so much for this recording. Sublime.

Lovely playing! I like the pull-off ornamentation and dynamics. I usually play the four part version. Wish I could play half as good as Eva.

Sweet! Monaghan is such a great tune, especially on the mandolin. Your playing really makes the tune work!
