Mandolin Mondays #145 w/ Special Guest Jake Jolliff

Rate this Entry
The incredible Jake Jolliff of Yonder Mountain String Band sends us his inimitable take on this jazz classic played on his recent 2017 x-braced Gilchrist mandolin.

Originally from Newberg, OR, Jake has basically done it all with the mandolin. While attending the Berklee College of Music, he joined the roots and bluegrass band Joy Kills Sorrow. He won the Winfield National Mandolin Contest in 2012, and now plays with the widely successful Yonder Mountain String Band.

Now Jake lives in New York City, and in-between dates with Yonder Jake also fronts his own group called the Jake Jolliff Band. He just released a jaw-dropping record of original music with this group entitled Instrumentals Vol. 1. Check it out here: https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/jacobjolliff

Jake teaches private lessons online and in person. Inquire at his website for more info.

Jaaaakkkeeeee! Glad to see you here. You're sounding great as ever.

Funny story. 3-4 months ago I was in Brooklyn (no, I don't live there) on the train. It stops, young guy with a man bun and a Calton case gets on, sits across from me. I walk over and sit down next to him, he looks at me funny, as he should have. I say, "hey man, you played your first out of state gig in Lawrence, KS when you were in high school, brought there by Ken Cartwright and didn't even get paid for it." Had not seen him in person since. We had 6-7 station stops to catch up before I exited.

We have someone (ahem) working, albeit slowly, towards a feature interview with Jake we hope to see in our mailbox in the future.

Maybe if I sell all my stuff and buy his old Sam Bush model I can be half as good.
