Mandolin Mondays #134 w/ Special Guest Dan Beimborn

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.
Owner and administrator of the Mandolin Archive website, Dan Beimborn sends us some jigs all the way from Norfolk, England played on his one-of-a-kind 1909 Gibson F4.

Dan has been a huge contributor to the online mandolin community for the past 15 years. His site http://www.mandolinarchive.com/ is the premier online database for vintage and boutique mandolins. period. But sadly not as many people know Dan for his incredible playing. His skill in the Irish mandolin scene is bar none. He has two albums that feature a host of heavy hitter studio musicians. Check them out here: http://www.mandolinarchive.com/dan/torch_and_fire.html

Here Dan gives us the details on the tunes and mandolin in this video, "The tunes are "Scarce O' Tatties" and "Con Cassidy's Jig." Tatties is a pipe jig written by Norman MacLean, and Con Cassidy's is a Donegal jig written by the late great Con Cassidy. The setting of 'tatties comes by way of Silly Wizard with some mandolin embellishments, and Con Cassidy's was taken from the playing of Paddy Glackin and transcriptions in The Northern Fiddler.

It's a 1909 Gibson F4, probably special ordered.. It came out of upstate New York- right around the time that this was made, Gibson was going through an innovative period- the first raised pick guards (this one has "Pat applied for" on it) came out at this time. This one is unusually nice, very good condition and nearly unplayed despite all sorts of nice woods. The top and back are both single-piece, and the grain density of the spruce on the top is unusually high."
