Saskatoon, Saskatchewan — Old-time and bluegrass mandolin player Mike Klein has announced the June 17 release of his debut album entitled Over the Waves.
Produced and mixed by five-time JUNO nominee and seven time Canadian Folk Award winner Andrew Collins, the album is a collection of old time tunes played in a mandolin-led stringband format.
On the recording Mike is backed by Canadian musicians Paul Gitlitz on fiddle, Jille Shotton on banjo, Ryan Shotton on guitar and Nicola Tabb on bass. Inspired by music like John Hartford or Foghorn Stringband, the album features haunting fiddle, plunky beautiful clawhammer banjo, grooving bass and driving guitar, all rounded out by Mike's aggressive mandolin-style.
Mike plays an A-stye mandolin built by Canadian luthier Michael Heiden.
