Kansas City, Mo. — The first mandolin orchestra in Kansas City in decades has announced its formation. The Mandolin Orchestra of Kansas City (MOOKC) is a new 501c3 non-profit organization seeking musicians and subscribing members.
The orchestra starts eight weeks of rehearsals on February 6 with two concerts planned for the Spring, followed by a summer break, and then resumes rehearsals in late September for the start of their 2018/2019 season.
Rehearsals will be held from 7:00 - 9:00 pm on the second floor of Prospero's Books, 1800 W 39th Street near Kansas University Medical Center.
The orchestra's music director is Phil DeWalt.
Organizer Scott McLewin told us "If you play a mandolin family instrument, guitar or upright bass and want to play in an orchestra, please join us. Bring a music stand, your instrument and be ready to sight read a little. Our plan is to play from a broad repertoire spanning the last few centuries of music, including modern compositions for mandolin family instruments."
Membership in the Mandolin Orchestra of Kansas City for the inaugural half-season has been set at $40. For their first full 2018/2019 season the cost will be $95.
