Great Lakes Music Camp 2018 Announced

Grand Rapids, Mich. — Registration has opened for this year's Great Lakes Music Camp (GLMC), a four-day acoustic music symposium held at Camp Blodgett (West Olive, MI) October 11-14, 2018. Space is limited and certain packages are already sold out.

The camp, which features some of the finest acoustic music instructors in the country, will include workshops, lessons, hosted jams, and concerts through the extended weekend in the bluegrass, old-time, swing, folk, and Americana styles.

The GLMC will offer mandolin, guitar, banjo, fiddle, and songwriting instruction from award winning musicians including Don Julin (author of Mandolin for Dummies), Bruce Molsky, Kenny Smith, John Mailander, David Benedict, Joe K. Walsh, Jason Wheeler, Bill Evans, Keith Billik, Hayes Griffin, and Bruce Ling. Additional instructors and performers will be announced later this summer.

Beginner, intermediate, and advanced tracks will be available. In addition, GLMC will be offering an "ensemble track" for campers that concludes with group performances at the end of the camp. These will be recorded and later offered to the campers as a take-away.

GLMC Executive Director, Jason Wheeler told us, "After a sold-out camp last year we knew we had an opportunity and a responsibility to raise the bar. The aim is to provide an experience that is both educational and enjoyable so we've added a day of instruction, more performances, and band-classes that give campers opportunities to practice, perform, and see world-class concerts.

"We'll be focusing on maximizing the play-time and creating as much interaction between instructors and campers as possible," he said.

Additional camp features include a youth scholarship program, movie nights, VIP reception, private concerts for campers, organic and locally-grown gourmet food, musicians hostel lodging option, hiking, and beach activities (weather permitting).

The GLMC has partnered with local nonprofit The Grand River Watershed Arts/Music Council (GRWAMC) who will serve as the fiduciary for the event for the second year.

A large benefit concert on Saturday, October 13 will raise money for both Camp Blodgett and GRWAMC. Concert details will be revealed in July. GLMC is actively seeking sponsors for the benefit concert.

"We want to create memories surrounded by music, friendship, and the beauty of Lake Michigan. The common thread between our team is that we all love music and appreciate the role it plays in our lives. We resonate with the idea that it's not about the music, but through the music. That basically means we acknowledge something deeper takes place by gathering, sharing and exploring music and we hope our campers will feel the passion we have for this work at this year's Great Lakes Music Camp. Sign up and see for yourself," said Wheeler.
