• AMGuSS: The American Mandolin & Guitar School Returns June 25-30

The American Mandolin & Guitar SchoolBristol, R.I. — Marilynn Mair's 26th American Mandolin & Guitar Summer School (AMGuSS) has announced June 25-30, 2018 as the dates for their annual session, held on the waterfront campus of Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Daily coaching over five full days, in both orchestra and small ensemble settings, focuses on creating a meaningful dialog between the accomplished faculty of five music professionals, and AMGuSS students, with the aim of improving overall musicianship and instrumental technique. Faculty bios are available on the AMGuSS webpage.

Repertoire to be studied in the ensembles includes a mix of Baroque, Classical, and Brazilian masterworks. The addition of evening concerts, daily classes, and informal jam sessions guarantees that AMGuSS will expand students' concept of what it is possible for them to achieve as musicians.

Participation is limited to 35 students. As a sell-out is anticipated, early registration is strongly recommended.

From rehearsal to performance, from Baroque ornamentation to Brazilian choro, AMGuSS is dedicated to broadening musical horizons and working with students to teach them how to listen critically, recognize form and structure, and create a musically satisfying interpretation that contributes to the whole.

Mair founded AMGuSS in 1986 for the purpose of promoting the art of ensemble playing for the guitar and mandolin family instruments. Each session combines classical study with an exploration of folk and world music, in workshops, chamber ensembles and an all-school plucked-string orchestra.

Tuition is $425 with a discount to $375 for early registration (through February 25) with on-campus room and board options available.
