• Elderly Instruments Mural Completed in Old Town

Lansing, Mich. — Last Summer, Stan Werbin, owner of Elderly Instruments, approached his niece, artist Jennifer Springman, to design and paint a mural on the outside of the Elderly building. He had no idea the excitement it would bring to Lansing.

In the 6 weeks it took to paint the mural, questions like, “What’s going in this building?” and “Is this really part of Elderly?” have been common from passersby.

Elderly moved to Old Town in 1984 after a twelve year span in East Lansing and added the building to the north in the early 90s. Now the 68 by 15 foot mural adorning the wall facing North Washington Avenue will give viewers a better sense of the scope of Elderly as well as provide a decorative face to the west side of Old Town.

Elderly Instruments plans to celebrate the completion of the mural with a gathering on Tuesday, July 21st at 2:00pm for the artist signing of the mural. Community members are encouraged to come listen to live music by Elderly employees, enjoy the freshly finished mural, and meet the artist. Speeches will be made by current City of Lansing councilwoman-at-large Carol Wood, an Old Town Commercial Association representative, and Stan Werbin beginning at 2:15pm.

The finished mural features a PRS electric guitar, a Martin HD-28 acoustic guitar and Style 3 ukulele, and a Deering Golden Era Banjo. The State Capitol building and the Brenke Fish Ladder are highlighted amongst a variety of patterns on the wall. Visitors can also join the life-size shadow band and take a photo with it. Old Town and Elderly logos are displayed proudly on the mural as well.
