Jazz mandolin with Tom Bekeny and the Missing Man Quartet
Tom Bekeny and the Missing Man Quartet will be playing in Albany Ca this Sunday Aug. 19 at Ocean View Brew Works, 627 San Pablo, 3-5:30. The band plays straight ahead jazz...standards and Great American Songbook. Joining Tom will be the following terrific musicians:
Guitarist and Jazz educator Greg Reginato attended Berklee College of Music and subsequently studied at UCLA. Pianist John Herbst writes, “[Greg has] an irrepressible need to be funky [and] has developed a comping style that's equally at home in any number of musical settings. His solos are always joyful and energetic”. Greg also contributed to vol. 1 of the Real Book, the renown Jazz fake book widely considered to be the bible for Jazz musicians throughout the world.
Drummer Bill Lanphier, primarily known as a bass player, played on Madonna’s 1985 Virgin Tour and in the house band for the Pat Sajak Show. He has recorded with the Rippingtons, Richard Carpenter, and has performed live with Tom Scott, David Foster, Michael Bolton, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Linda Ronstadt. His bass playing can be heard on hundreds of radio and TV commercials. In addition to his Jazz chops, Bill is also an expert performer of Bulgarian and Macedonian music and has published a book of instrumentals and vocals on the topic.
Craig Griffeath, electric bass, is a versatile musician who has played for over 40 years in various musical contexts including blues, r&b, folk, rock, and jazz. His tenure with the Missing Man Quartet has given him an opportunity to develop a unique voice as a Jazz soloist.
...And a bit about Tom:
Tom Bekeny, mandolin, has been performing, touring, and recording since 1974—mainly in the world of Bluegrass music. He has appeared with Peter Rowan, David Grisman, Laurie Lewis, and Jerry Garcia, and plays regularly with Kathy Kallick, High Country, banjoist Bill Evans and the Missing Man Quartet. Tom is helping unlock the Jazz potential of mandolin and is among the very few mandolinists today playing in an authentic mainstream Jazz style.
