Jazz Mandolin with Tom Bekeny and the Missing Man Quartet
The Missing Man Quartet, featuring Tom Bekeny on mandolin, will be bringing some straight ahead jazz to the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur Landing (2257 Larkspur Landing Circle, Larkspur CA) this Friday March 16. The MM4 is one of the still rare mainstream jazz groups that features mandolin played in an authentic jazz style. Tom and bandmates Craig Griffeath (bass), Bill Lanphier (drums), and Greg Reginato (guitar) will be playing original interpretations of jazz standards, latin, blues, bossa nova and be bop instrumentals. There is no cover and the music starts at 6pm.
Greg "Reg" Reginato (guitar) honed his skills at Berklee and later entered grad studies at UCLA. While at Berklee Greg, along with Steve Swallow, helped put together the first volume of the jazz musician's bible the "RealBook". Pianist John Herbst says of Greg,"With an irrepressible need to be funky, Reg has developed a comping style that's equally at home in any number of musical settings. His solos are always joyful and energetic". Greg performs with a wide range of groups in the SF Bay Area and is involved in teaching harmony and guitar technique locally and over the internet.
Bill Lanphier, drums, has recorded and played bass with the Rippingtons, Richard Carpenter, Harry Chapin, Stephen Stills and Tim Weisberg. Bill has performed live with Madonna (the 1985 Virgin Tour and Live Aid), Tom Scott, Kenny G, David Foster, Michael Bolton, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Art Garfunkle, and Linda Ronstadt. Bill's playing can be heard on hundreds of radio and TV commercials, and currently he performs live with several Bay Area mainstream and Latin jazz artists.
Craig Griffeath(bass) is a versatile musician who has played bass in various musical contexts for the last 40 years including Blues, R&B, Folk, Rock, and more recently, in Jazz. His 7-string electric bass adds a distinctive sound to the group. Aside from functioning in the familiar rhythm section role, the group gives Craig an opportunity to stretch out as a soloist who shares a melodic role equally with the guitar and mandolin.
