  1. Dreadful Over Humidification

'The marketers seem to grasp that it is not the product but the practice that is really attractive.'
Shop Class as Soulcraft: An inquiry into the Value of Work

One of the most damaging repairs Bruce gets in (unfortunately fairly often) is due to over humidification. Remember how he sniffs each instrument? One time an instrument had so much mold (from Hawaii including a fair amount of rust and gecko droppings) that we thought he might have been poisoned after breathing it ...

  2. Mandolin Mondays #31 - "Ship in the Clouds"

I recently stumbled upon this gorgeous crooked old-time tune and had to make a video of it. Really inspired by Scott Nygaard's take on the piece on his great record, Dreamer's Waltz.

  3. Classifieds Change - Phone Number now not displayed by default

Effectively immediately we're taking additional steps to protect users of our Classifieds. While we will continue to list the phone field during the submission process it will be hidden by default. On occasions, though very rare, we need to contact party that placed an ad, and for that reason we will allow the field to be filled but it will be hidden by default.

We still strongly encourage you to make human, phone contact with people you are dealing with. However, we are going to ...

  5. Intro and a Little Repair Philosophy

Kyle, of the Mando Shop in Florida, just started a new blog and asked us to write a few articles...thought I'd share them here too!

....... I, Mary Weber, wife of Bruce, will be writing the first few articles as Bruce is a bit under-the-weather right now.

Kyle asked me to start by telling a little about our new business, Montana Lutherie. For those who donít know Bruce, I consider him totally ĎThe Mandolin Maní. He worked for The Flatiron Mandolin and Banjo Co. before ...

  7. Duo Debut

My duo has its first real gig at a local winery this Sunday. Although we provided music at a memorial celebration, and have sat in at a few open-mic or similar situations, this is a longish gig at 4 hrs, and will need all our song list. Probably we will each offer a solo tune or song to stretch things. It will be the first actual market test, so to speak, of our mandolin-bass duo.

I'm confident it will go well--we have been invited back to other settings. My partner, Tracy, will play ...

  8. Mandolin Mondays #29 - Chief Sitting in the Rain

Happy Birthday (7/17) to one of the greatest mandolinists of all time, Mike Marshall!!! I've learned so much from Mike over the years and he's been such a huge inspiration and help in my journey with the mandolin. Here's one of my favorite tunes that Mike recorded on that famous Gator Strut record. I amiably stole a of couple licks...

  9. Kerman mandolin and the end of MAS

Hey everyone. I played a Kerman mandolin the other day. And it has taken me a little while to absorb the experience. Actually, Jacob Reuven, before a rehearsal for FMCM VII let me play his Kerman.

I knew already that it is one of the greatest mandolins in the world. What I didn't know, if the one I played is typical, Kermans are the greatest mandolins in the world.

The experience was characterized by two things. Amazing sound and amazing responsiveness.

    The ...

  10. Mandolin Mondays #28 - Home, Sweet Home

Working on my "banjo roll" cross-picking with this classic tune made popular on the banjo by Charlie Poole, Earl Scruggs and others. I had the privilege of borrowing this monstrous A. Lawrence Smart octave mandolin from the great Matt Flinner.
