A friend to many and one hell of a mando player, Kelly Lancaster, passed away last year and he told me that Maydelle's Reel would be his lasting contribution, song wise, to the community and was impressed when the Butch Baldassari, the Shaw Brothers at Winfield and now David Bromberg has recorded it on his new album Only Slightly Mad. It's briefly shown in the beginning of this video and it does me good to see appreciation for this simple and beautiful melody.

No one plays it as good as Kelly but, hey, he was one of a kind.

The duo mando tune sounds like Monroe's Hornpipe, to me.

Yes, of course, you're right. I posted the wrong video and I think I was trying to post a link to the amazon site instead which has no video. Ugh. I've had a tough 2 weeks. Sorry. My brain feels like silly putty. The kind that's been played with in the dirt and has hair and twigs stuck in it.

Now I don't know where it is. Pain meds aren't really all they're cracked up to be. Neither is being sick. :( Here's the Shaw Brothers ripping it up though.

Great version of it on Randy Powell's CD with Kelly playing and Dave Peters on mandolin. I have always loved that tune and it was awesome to hear Kelly and Dave play it in a jam.

I saw him play that one a bunch. He could play infinite variations on a theme it seemed. The best was with Randy, Bobby, Chris and the rest of the gang at the jam one night before we found out about the cancer (*#&$#). Still, he knew Maydelle's Reel would be his legacy and I'm glad to see it being played more often.

It's simple and fun to play yet lends itself to a great deal of improvisation for those capable of such things. I think in the years to come it will continue to catch on and expand it's circle.

I am still blown away by both Kelly and David's playing on the live recording. I wish they were wider known, I wish that there were more recordings of their music, both studio and live, and I wish that I knew more about these players. Seems like some seriously hidden gems in the mando and guitar communities that deserve to be widely known.
