The first looks very similar to this B&J Victoria mandolin (http://www.ebay.com/itm/MG-ESTATE-ANTIQUE-8-STRING-VICTORIA-B-J-BOWL-BACKED-MANDOLIN-CASE-/380734173565?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58a586717d) currently on eBay.

The second is obviously a Stella mandolin, rather low end by the painted-on pickguard and minimal number of ribs on the bowl.

The Stella mandolin was made by the Oscar Schmidt Company of Jersey City, NJ. The Stella brand name was later purchased by the Harmony Company of Chicago, Ill. Your mandolin precedes that. IT would have been an entry level model, a student grade instrument. ARe they family heirlooms?
