I am planning on ordering "Back to Back" in the next couple weeks. Everything you all have said has been appealing. I read about it and i know a couple of the songs. Being a blugrasser i am kind of scared of trying it but any kind of mandolin pickin i hear i usually love. So is it a go or not? Give me your oppinions on what to expect. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

It ain't bluegrass, even though there is a version of Moonlight Waltz and Maiden's Prayer. That would be 2 cuts out of 13. Rather than waste a lot of time agonizing over what the music is like, check out the Jethro Burns Lessons that are part of this website under "links". If you like a lot of that music, I would buy the Back to Back CD. If not, save your money and buy good whiskey.

I can't offer to buy it from you if you don't like it, but if I did......I doubt I would need to. It is just darn good music!

"You have nothing to fear but fear itself." - Go for it, PGAfan. There's a lot of great music beyond Bluegrass' narrow margins. Take a chance! I'm with you - I just ordered it from Elderly though I already have "Swing Low, Sweet Mandolin" which is sublime at the least. Fwiw, I play mostly Bluegrass mando, but I don't listen to much Bluegrass - way too much other stuff to be influenced by. Cheers.

Two reasons to avoid this one:
1)If you feel the sound of mandolins is irritating
2)If you feel swing music is boring

Otherwise its a "must buy"http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I had forgotten that Dizzy Gillespie wrote "Grooving High." Hearing this cut prompted me to TAB it for anyone interested.
Enjoy (http://tannah.net/ted/Groovin_High.pdf).
(Guitar Finale is what I use, by the way.)

Maybe I shouldn't say this, but you can to itunes and listen to 30 sec clips of every song on the record. If you can't make up your mind after that, just buy the thing. I use itunes alot for "presceening" my music selections.
