View Full Version : Have you named your mandolin?

Ben Cooper
Sep-21-2013, 8:52pm
Here is a question I find interesting. Do people name their mandolins? I know many people have several, and may not name them all, but some may name their "primary" instrument. Its just that I have been thinking of this lately. I have a new Girouard coming very soon and she (yes I already know she is a she) is quite gorgeous. I cannot wait to hear her. Ok, yes, I am a little crazy. I am hoping that an appropriate name will come to me once I play her for a while.
Anyway... anyone wanna chime in with names, reasons for naming or reasons for not naming.

Thanks all!

My F-style mandolin came pre-named from the builder. Otherwise, none of my instruments have names. However, if i was to name then I would name them all the same name like with BB King. All of his guitars are Lucille, doesn't matter which one it is.

Hi Benjamin35

Have two mandolins: my crafter is Vanilla, reason she has somewhat of a yellow colour, or rather a lighter blond colour, so actually the colour of something like Vanilla ice-cream.

My second, the Jbovier, is also a "she" so they are my daughters of music and light! The Jbovier is called Flame, reason the dark colours, deep browns with the fire of the sunburst.
I named them for how I experienced them.

I like that thought. Named for how you experience them. I know I will wait until I experience mt new mando before she "officially" gets her name.

Hi Benjamin35

I hope that mandolin arrives soon and may the experience be exquisite.

Both my mandolins are experienced at such a personal level, however, I guess that goes without saying. A musician will experience that with there instrument.
When you have experienced that mandolin be sure to write something on my forum "music experiences" There people speak about their music experiences; or if you wish "Diary of a mandolin player"
But whatever you do have great fun when that new mandolin arrives.

Arrive is not quite the word. I live 15 minutes from the makers and I have been there to pick each material that has gone into the making of this truly personalized instrument. That being said, I know what you mean. How I experience her will truly be the defining factor. I will be in SA next July/August and wish I could bring her with me but I will not risk it.
The personal experience I have had with the makers has been incredible. I have seen, touched, heard and "experienced" her through the whole process.
I will write on your forum pages once I have her in hand and we are aying together!

I've named my washbern-- I called her Loreley. It seemed fitting, because in the song by Blackmore's night, the Loreley is like a creature akin to a siren from greek mythology. It seemed fitting since I wasn't going to go back from learning, Always have loved music.
I haven't got my new eastman yet, but, I was considering either Nicolo, or Octavia. Nicolo for NIcolo Paganini, and Octavia, for a character from a cartoon.
Either of them would be fitting. I'll have to wait to see how the mandolin sounds to decide, though.
can't wait! :)

I named my mandolin "em." I don't call it by name. It is an inanimate object. It doesn't speak to me. I have no occasion to use the name or speak it aloud. However, I remember "em" as its name. It just is.

The name helps me remember the serial number. Once I recall "em" I think of M45, the star cluster perhaps better known as the Pleiades that is represented on the front of every Subaru on the planet.

I hope such information is not necessary as I do not intend to lose my mandolin, but in this way the serial number is properly stored in my head and I wouldn't have to look it up or write it down.

I did like "my precious." That is a pretty good name too.

I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl

Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Agreed. I had a few inputs in the selection of some aspects of my Jbovier a5 and it all, from the order being placed right through to the receiving and savouring of the sound, becomes a deeply personal experience.

You are coming toSA during our Arts Festival time in Grahamstown? who knows maybe a festive jam session can be arranged? I will even let you play the Jbovier, not the crafter.
The Crafter can still sound sweet enough.
Though I may not be the biggest bluegrass player, but who knows?

I'm not much on personification. Though I do refer to my instruments as my wooden friends. I have enough trouble remembering peoples names. Although I do name my associate animals. My instruments are referred to by their make and model as I am not wealthy enough to own any two of the same make and model this works out OK. If I had a ridiclous amount of money perhaps I would buy them matching case covers so they could all be "dressed" alike. Then I could call them Richard's Kids ..... that's a naming of sorts idnit? LOL R/

Justus True Waldron
Sep-23-2013, 7:45am
My mando was named by the maker... so I guess I've stuck with that. Instead of serial numbers, Marty M. names his instruments when building them to keep the parts together and log the measurements in his note book. Looking through one of the F holes I can just make out "Liz", so I guess I have Liz. She's a bit of a loud and boisterous girl, but she sure is pretty... and in the right mood she's right sweet as well!

Funny, I never think of any instruments as being one or the other sex. I've also only "named" the contest Collings (and in a rather gender-neutral fashion, as well); for my little collection, the maker's name, or brand and model will do just fine...

Because MAS can strike without warning... that just needed to be said.
I have kept my names to color. My F-Style is known as Red. The Hohner A-syle is Blue, or Ol' Blue. But, I added an oval hole Rogue (really to replace the broken Fender) and I just call it Oval Hole.
I wish the names were more creative, but it's simple enough.

I was once the recipient of a "gift" in the form of a used Ford LTD. We called it the LSD, a/k/a The Love Boat. My fondest memory is of trying to jack it up in the mud to change a flat, and watching the jack sink further and further into the abyss.

Other than that, I'm not in the habit of naming inanimate objects. However I did have a GF who had a name for everything (and I do mean everything). She called her guitar "Martha." I thought maybe it was after the Jefferson Airplane song, but learned to my great dismay that it was after Martha Stewart.

Some instruments (like vehicles) name themselves. Some don't. Don't ask me how or why. Maybe I hear voices. Maybe it's a subconscious process akin to pledge naming at Delta House. One day, they tell me. "My Delta Tau Chi name is Mothball".

My dad used to say that a vehicle's personality was based on their quirks and reliability. He drove British cars. Need I say more? He opined that they name themselves as governed by their personalities.

So far, my A1, with whom I've lived for over 40 years has asked to be called "Li'l Guy". My other instruments are newer and, given that their life spans can and should exceed our own, they probably haven't started speaking yet. Actually, not quite true. They all say "NO" when I ask them to do something of dubious musicality.

Vehicles, whose life spans are shorter, start talking within about a year.
My old Ducati 900 is "Raoul Duc". My 2001 BMW R1100R is "Frau Mozart", and my 350 bhp Subaru is "Wil", from WLIRP (World's Largest Intermittently Rolling Paperweight).

Thus endeth my contribution of philosophical bulls**t for this morning.

Best I could do really. It's inspired by the original owner for whom Phil D made it (Davey Dodds ex-Red Jasper (prog band) who sold it when he gave up playing apparently). Ha ha he he ho ho, your wife has an amazing sense of humour Tobe.

My wife brought my last mandolin and wrapped it for Christmas, whenever I asked her a question about it
I got told they haven't got me a mandolin, and when I pointed out the suspicious shaped object I was informed
that they had wrapped some Rhubarb for me to wind me up. Ever since my mandolin goes by the name Rhubarb.

Hah! That is great. It also reminds me of Les Paul who's first nom-de-music was Rhubarb Red.

Frankly (no! not that name) I don't name any instruments. First of all, I have way too many and second, I can't even remember my hundreds of passwords and PINs on the computer and elswhere. Besides, even if I named them all, would they come to me when I called them by name?

I refer to my instruments by their given names. My Ellis is called, 'My Ellis'. Guess what I call my Weber and my Gibson?

A friend of mine has two guitars, one is blonde and the other is a blacktop arch top. She named them Sheep Crook and Black Dog.
