Here is the first of a few videos with 3 members of the Modern Mandolin Quartet and substitute mandolinist, Lief Karlstrom playing my matched "Element" quartet at this summer's Healdsburg Guitar Festival. I built this quartet with each instrument to work together sonically in an ensemble. This video isn't the clearest and it hopefully will be cleaned up in the near future. I'll post a few more videos of this performance in the next few days. Hope you enjoy

Dana Rath's A does seem to dominate volume wise here, but that mandocello holds it own!
A very rich texture with the complete quartet.

a wonderful collection

Here is the last video from this summer's Healdsburg Guitar fest. This one a Philip Glass piece. This one might be my favorite, but I do love the Flower Duet too.

They all sound amazing, but that oval A really speaks right out, doesn't it? Beautiful instruments, Lawrence!

thanks everybody. It really felt like some sort of career highlight, having worked hard all winter on the instruments and having spent all of my 27 year career developing the chops and ears to get this together. Big thanks to the MMQ guys for being willing to play. I missed getting Matt Flinner on the bill by just one day, but he has the entire quartet with him in Nashville right now, so he is getting some time with these instruments.

Those are great, as others have already said, if that doesn't put a smile on your face nothing will :)

Flower duet was definitely my favorite - great arrangement, and excellent (sensitive!) playing.

I had a chance to play these instruments for a couple of hours when Lawrence brought them down here to hand off to Matt Flinner. They are absolutely spectacular.

In the past, I've always bit my tongue (fingers?) when my brother's instruments have been discussed on the cafe. I don't want to appear biased, even though I've played a whole bunch of them and I'm a repeat customer myself. But this one time, I'm going to make an exception.

Because this quartet is really great work, and I'm proud of him.

Hey ............ I'm proud of him too! And I'm not related, just a friend and admirer.
I've also collaborated with Lawrence & commissioned him to build 4 instruments over the years.

These are a great Quartet of instruments, I saw & heard them at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival.

gosh, Thanks brother Tom and pal Arthur. It means a lot to me that you would both admit to this publicly. I am proud to call you both my buds, musical and otherwise. It would be cool if these 4 instruments could stay together, but that is a giant long shot and I'm sure they'll be happy in whatever individual homes they find. It's definitely been a fun challenge to view 4 instruments with one overriding sound and I'm already formulating in my mind the next quartet.
