I know most of you fellow mandolin pickers know your guitars also. I have been told this is a 1962 J-45. I want to be sure of the model before driving two hours to view it. The guy sounds suspect, and there is evidently no sticker or stamp on the inside indicating what the guitar is. The serial number on the back of the headstock is 50986. Thanks for any replies.

It looks J-45ish to me. He's not giving you a whole lot to go on with those pictures.

I think that I have determined it's a Gibson LG-1. There value known to be in good shape and playable is not very great. Purchasing this would be a crap shoot, as I won't know anything about playing condition until it is fixed and strung. I informed him I am passing. He'll take $600 if anyone is interested., PM me.

You may be right on the LG. Hard to say with nothing to compare size against except a bed.

The LG-1 is the ladder-braced version of this size of smaller guitar. That one looks like it might be later 1950s (from the pickguard shape). That one looks to be missing some parts but if the body is in decent shape that price is a good one, I don't know what you are saying about (I think) value and playability not being great. it is prob a nice little guitar. I have an early 1950's LG-2 (x-braced) and it is a excellent guitar, one of the main ones I play for old time back up and other things.

1950's LG series. X-braced are good sounding and playing guitars. Certain models are fairly valuable, $2 to $3K.

Definately looks smaller than a J

I have never seen that bridge on a J model, I've seen it on plenty of LG's.

J-35 have that straght-across non-belly bridge. However the shape of the body is LG all the way, to me. Very similar to this LG-1 from 1956.

$600 is a very good price for that guitar whether or not it's an L or a J. The J45 I have heard referred to as "The Working Man's Guitar" used by many professional country musicians for being both reliable and obtainable-if you can only have one guitar they are good for both touring and studio work. Hard to tell from photos as to size but this one does appear to be an LG and is probably a pretty nice guitar just the same. You can expect to pay $600+ for an LG-0 which is half the guitar that one is.

I sit corrected.

May it be a B-25.

I think the B-25 replaced the LG series around 1962 and this looks like later 1950s to me.

A few years back I responded to a CL ad for a J45 with no photos. I agreed to meet the seller at a midway point on my lunch hour. When I opened up the case, I found it to be a B25N, '64 I think. It was in great shape with all the case candy including his aunt's original bill of sale. We adjusted the price a little, I was very happy with the purchase.

Is the bridge plastic or wood? If I recall correctly, the more valuable (and earlier) LG-1s have a wooden bridge.

Looks alot like my LG1 . Mine is ladder braced and frankly my least favorite guitar. Pretty mid range but no bass to speak of. It is a good price at $600 if you like that sort of thing.
