Chris has 2(?) Dudenbostels. I believe that he used to play a Gibson (Fern?) before that. HTH

He does have his own Dude (#14) and I don't know if he owns #5 or not, but he was borrowing it before. He's also got that cool Rigel and a ton of others I'm sure.

I think he owns #5, based on the discussion about his instrument on woodsongs. I also believe its the one he uses most of the time.

I'm pretty sure it is number 5. He talks about it during his set with Mike Marshall on the Woodsongs site....

Chris Thile does own both of the Dudenbostel mandolins. The #5 was the one that he fell in love with at a bluegrass festival that Lynn Dudenbostel was at. While he was there he told Lynn that he had to have one so Lynn just told him to take the one he was playing(the #5), so Chris did. In the mean time Lynn Dudenbostel made Chris Thile his own mandolin(#14). When Chris received his #14 he gave back the #5 to Lynn but soon realized he wanted it too, so he went to Lynn and bought the #5 from him as well. Chris also has a Gibson Fern, a Rigel, a flatiron bouzouki and a Davis I believe. If you go see them live you will see that Chris has a bouzouki and a back up mandolin with him on stage. The back up mando is usually the Fern or the Davis.

Dfyngravity: You're history is very close, however, #5 was sold by Lynn to another owner who subsequently sold it to Chris.

Oh, to own another.

Oh #5... why o why did I let you leave me that day in Chattanooga.

I tried to con Lynn into selling me #5 before Thile got a his greasy little hands on it. I think it was Lynns demo mando he had that day showing it around. I knew the minute I played that bad boy it was SPECIAL ONE. I tried my best to take her home that day. #Oh #5 why did the forsake me http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I had a chance to play #5 a few days before Chris bought it. Nickel Creek was doing a show in town and Chris picked it up while he was here. The fellow that sold it to him was a real gentleman. It was the best playing and sounding Mandolin I've experienced. I'll always remember it!

Hmmm, well I'm going on second hand info... a friend of mine inquired about what kind of Bouzouki Chris plays and was told by the management that it's a Weber.

Goodness knows the guy may have more than one LOL.

Scoresheet? #Like who people are?

Lookit.... signature.... below? LOL

When I started posting there were no other Creekster names, sorry http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Danny Roberts of Gibson owns a Master Model that was given to Chris for his use.He used it about a year and returned it because he wasn't using it on stage like Gibson wanted.

Oh #5 why did the forsake me

The mandolin of power seeks the more powerful owner, of course! If it should happen to come across an even better player than Chris, no doubt it will forsake Chris too...:p

Christine W
Feb-27-2004, 11:18am
Yes it definitly is the Preciousss for many of us as long as I don't start looking like Gullum. I'm fine with that. That makes me think we need to keep an eye on THile make sure he doesn't get consumed and start looking and acting like Gullum.....ok I'm done now with the #stupidness... coffee need more coffee. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

What a sharp eye you have

Jun-18-2004, 7:58am
Does anyone know all the specs on Thiles Dudenbostel? Like the fret size, thickness of the sides, what type of bridge, neck shape, What it was tuned to, what type of wood was used on the soundboard, nut width and material the of the nut?

levin4now
Jun-18-2004, 9:20am
I thought that when I saw Nickel Creek playing on Austin City Limits a few weeks ago, that Thile was playing an F5 with a broken point on the headstock. Can anyone verify that I saw this, and which mando would it have been. I could have swore that I couldn't read the name for all the letters squeezed on the headstock (Dudenbostonboyel?).

Was it is his "beater"?

mzbanjo
Jun-18-2004, 9:23am
That was (I believe) his Dude #14, and yes the headstock was broken at the time. I think he got it fixed but can't say for sure. Anybody know how it got broken?

onlyagibsonisgoodenuff
Jun-18-2004, 9:25am
If you can call a Dude a beater, okay. Check out the picture above that Christine posted.

levin4now
Jun-18-2004, 9:45am
I was kidding about the "beater"...but then again, broken headstock means it's been beat.

Jun-18-2004, 1:23pm
Ok how about them specs?
