Sometimes I wear a bumblebee pick on my index finger upside-down, and it feels very close to a flatpick, especially in the light gauge. The thumb of the picking hand is in a normal position, but you can completely release your grip. A picture would help here. I think there is potential to further develop this idea. Can you visualize the "index" pick ?

Herco makes a reasonable one .. not as thick as a Dawg Pick,
but at least I don't have to look for it, falling, on the floor..

I've been using the Herco picks for years. I also play guitar so works great for flat/fingerpicking.

I would if I was not left handed, Hercos are not available for leftys. I have had good success with the lighter gauge bumblebee hybrid pick, and more so on my Big Muddy Mandolin. My Eastman Oval seems to demand a thicker pick to pull out the tone.
These hybrid picks require a slightly different touch, but it can work. For those of us who seem "pick challenged" they are worth the adaptation.

always kludges for those unwilling to say it cannot be done.
They are a thermoplastic , make something shaped like a thumb and boiling water will soften the plastic ,
may be able to reverse the bend and hold it that way till it cools ..
