Here are my two Gibson Master Models. #The one on the right is a 2001, the one on the left is a 2004. #Both are signed by Charlie Derrington. Notice that the 2001 has a one piece back, whereas the 2004 has a two piece back. #Check out the grain in the maple backs. #Also look at how much they differ in color.

Sweet. Any noticeable difference in tone? Would assume the 2001 is a bit more opened-up...

Both mandolins are so close in sound and volume that it is hard to tell. A couple of my mandolin buddies prefer the 2001, I personally prefer my 2004. John

Another example of Gibson/Charlie's continual improvement and attention to details. #The 2004 is much closer to original coloring and the burst is located correctly with respect to the bridge for an more pleasing balance

The back on the 2001 looks more Loar like to me as far as wood and burst.

You are right in many respects..but..it really depends on the batch/date on the Loar..Feb and July 23 pictured here

Gibsonman,

I noticed that your truss rod covers are white. Did you replace them? Mine is March 02 vintage, and it is a black cover.

Yes I put the m.o.p. truss rod covers on myself. I just think they look better, even though they are not org. But I still have the org. I really like things org., but in this case oh well.

Well I must confess, mine is no longer all original either. I scalloped the fret board extension. But then again, I understand that process can be reversed.

A friend of mine said I should do that too, But that will never happen as long as I have them. Whoever has them say 60 yrs. from now, will be able to say they are org.
