Hi there

I recently got this mandolin, it came out of an estate auction and found it's way to me. I've restrung it and it plays well. I'm new to the mandolin but I have been playing guitar and ukulele for many years.

There is no name on the headstock and no serial #(so it might be fake) only a lable inside saying Ibanez. Here are a couple of pics. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

Nobody would fake an Ibanez label, it's an Ibanez.

It's the real deal. I have an electric model mando in the shop from the same time period (60s) with the same label type. Definitely Japanese-made Ibanez.

Thanks for the replies. I just love instruments that have a story even if it is hard to find:)

Wow! I couldn't believe it when I saw your pics! I bought mine at a yard sale in the late 1980s for less than $5. I bought it for use as a wall hanger. I thought the "seaside" theme was funky. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I actually bothered to look inside, and ended up finding out that it was a Japanese made Ibanez.

The only difference between yours and mine, is your "seashell" has broken off the tailpiece. Oh, and you have a nice case - Idon't. I think jake is right about it being from the 1960s, however I have a current official request into Ibanez for identification. I'm hoping to hear back from them soon, and if you're still interested, I could forward their assessment onto you.

Sorry I'm six months late - cheers

If I recall right these were not made by Ibanez, they had another company make the bowls, I will have to see if I can find the site about the history, bit here is a catalog with one

Darryl, the mandolins in this thread don't have bowls that I can tell. They don't appear to be anything special or valuable, but may be nice sounding mandolins if playable.
