Sometimes the strings below the bridge resonate audibly. The rubber grommets dampen that.

Joe, you can buy them at any harware store and give them a try, I have tried them and never did see any difference...For what tey cost it is worth trying...Some people just weave a short piece of rawhide through the strings and they say it cures the overtones...
