I bought Nugget #115 in Montreal a few weeks back, and it sounded great. I've just restrung it with John Pearse strings, and it's jaw dropping. Loud, sparkly, and full. Traded two great guitars to get it, but it was worth it. I'm told it was given as the mandolin prize at the 1987 Telluride Bluegrass Festival, but I've not been able to confirm that yet.

That is one beautiful, aged mandolin! Enjoy, Darrell :) Of course, I'd love to hear it too.

There is such an understated beauty in Mike's work. I only have played one (a friend's F5) but it was a wonderful mandolin.

Such a close kinship between Nugget and Collings mandolins. Headstock detail, body shape... Never played one. Someday, hopefully.

And just the perfect amount of natural "distressing." Primo!

Other than their collaboration on the T O'B models...Nugget carving the plates... I didn't realize there was any kind of kinship? Can you explain in greater detail...

Beautiful mandolin btw, congrats and welcome. You're one lucky Dude...make some noise!

No, really, that's all I got. I didn't mean they collaborate, just that they share a lot of the same details... Some A's have a more pronounced "O" shape. Nugget and Collings (and others, yeah) have a more graceful taper from the neck.

Isn't the headstock somewhat similar (except reversed) on the two makes?

Had a chance to compare my Nugget to a 1924 Lloyd Loar F5 (listed at $175,000) and a 2004 Nugget F last week in Nashville at Carter Vintage who are about to open. The Loar was a little better (to my ear, probably worth a 20% premium over my Nugget). A little bigger sound, a little brighter, but less woody. The 2004 Nugget, I didn't like as well as my A. The Loar was a beautiful mandolin, but crazy price... I'd rather buy a Nugget and a house to put it in.

Too wise.

Don't know if it was mentioned but Mike consulted with Collings when they began their mandolin program.
