Extending instrumental solos

Some of you experienced folks chime in please...if I take a song like Cripple Creek, and want to play it for several minutes as a solo, aside from pitching in runs between verses, how do I go about transitioning from key of G to Key of D to extend the tune? Do I simply transition to the new key, or maybe play a G lick that resolves in D? Trying to broaden my horizons!

At the end of either the A or B part try going up a whole step to A7 for a measure. This will resolve to the key of D and give the song a kick in the !!!.
