I just changed the strings on my Tacoma M2 for the 2nd time since I bought it in November. Replaced Martin 10's with some cheap generic 12's distributed by the Old Town School of Folk Music store around the corner in Chicago. 5 bucks. It said "Roar like Loar" on the package. Made me laugh. Thought I'd give it a try...

What a difference. Whereas the Martins took almost a day to get to pitch, these heavier strings tuned right up and have stayed that way since Saturday. The semi-sitar overtone that was coming from my A string (while not that unpleasant) is gone. The instrument is louder and punchier and I definitely like the stiffer feel. The Tacoma sounded pretty good before, but it's sounding great now... and for five bucks I can make the 2 minute walk any time for another set. Ah, the simple pleasures....

The search for the right mando/string/pick combination can at times be exhausting but once it all comes together it is a beautiful thing.

(Collings/J74/Dunlop 208, for me is heaven)
