I have a Michael Kelly Legacy O mando. I would like to try med/heavy to heavy guage strings.

Will these less expensive instruments take the strain in the long term, just in case I should want to keep the heavy wires?

I ruined an Alverez copy of the D-28 Martin by using heavy guage Bluegrass strings. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Go to the Cafe's home page and scroll down until you see the Michael Kelly logo. Click on it and you'll be at their website. From there you could search out your nearest dealer, or send an email right to the main office or call them on the telephone and ask them directly for the most reliable answer.

You may also have to re-adjust your setup if you go to a heavier string (i.e., the nut slot may need to be redressed).

I have had Heavy TIs on my MK "butterfly" for over a year and no problem.

I also have an MK "O" legacy with the same strings on it for several months with no problems.
