I've read enough about him to whet my interest in his blues mandolin but really know nothing about his playing.

I also understand that he put out a Blues Mandolin instructional video which is no longer available. I would be interested in buying a copy if someone has one they are no longer interested in.

Interesting tremolo in the very small snippet given on the website.

Did he do a blues book too? I have his jugband book (I've mentioned at about a dozen times I think!) and think it a better value then the Steve James Blues video.
I'm surprised that the book(s) aren't offered on the site.

I agree
The Jugband Book is the best available if you go for that oldtime country blues....
I assume ( or maybe better hope) his site is still under construction and maybe it will come up in the near future. There have been several "wanted" ads for this method here at the cafe. All those should email Rich to show their interest so that it would make sence for Rich to re-issue this Jugband Method.

Highly Recommended !http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blues.gif

The Steve James video is fantastic. I've never heard heard
Rich DelGrosso play so I can't opine but Steve James' sounds very authentic!

Perry,
The James does sound authentic, but after buying both, I found the DelGrosso book/tape covered more interesting chord progressions and riffs. It might be that Yank Rachell style doesn't do enough for me, and to be honest, I learn more from printed material then video.

Rich is the guy that got me interested in blues mando. I went to Blues Week at Augusta for the first time 3-4 years ago. Rich seemed to part of every jam (including some electric ones) making great music.

i don't have rich's book (i really should get it). steve j's video is good, but acompanying printed material is mediocre to say the least, and it is really geared toward guitarists taking up the mando rather than for the pure mando player. therefore, it is a combo of really beginner stuff like what is a mando and what types of mandos are there, to discussions that suggest lots of prior knowledge with string instruments and a rapid progression into tunes that one would have if an expert musician. i like it, but i can't say its fantastic. (though the live cuts of he and john sebastian jamming are wonderful to watch as they are joyful in their expression of these tunes). just my 10 cents

I think of Rich whenever I hear someone complain that their fingers are too big to play mando. I knew Rich years ago in Detroit and he is a big dude with no problems getting around on a little instrument.

Got an e-mail from Rich this morning and he said:

"I just got the nod from Hal Leonard to write a new book on jugband and blues mandolin. It should be out by summer. Check my website for details. I also post writing and sound files on the site. Play the blues!"

Can't wait!

COOOOOL !

Thanks Ken for letting us know about the new Jugband/Blues Mando method. I really hope it is a "new" one and not just a re-release of the old one.

Cheers,René
