Could somebody help me out here? I have a sunburst Flatiron pancake 2M made in Bozeman. Card says "Signature Series" serial number 91114427. The instrument has snowflake fretboard inlays, a beautiful birdseye maple back, and no truss rod.

I was told the first two digits of the serial number denote year of production; if so, it was made in 1991.

I thought that Flatiron had been purchased by Gibson by that time and that all Flatiron pancakes of that era had truss rods.

Coud anybody tell me anything about these Signature Series instruments? Was lack of a truss rod a common thing with them? Any insights will be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Yeah, I don't know when they went to adjustable truss rods, but my 84 is quite stable and doesn't have one either. Just remember to use light-gauge strings! There's likely a sticker inside of the instrument that lists recommended string gauges. The GHS A-250s (and likely others too) match the recommended gauges exactly.

Got a photo? I love these mandolins!
