The Grisman/Taylor CD, " I'm beginning to see the light" is a big hit in our house, and I'm interested in hearing from folks about other CD's that feature Jazz standards played on the mando. Thanks!

well, the first thing that comes to my mind is the entire jethro burns catalog. there are two cd's on acoustic disc- "swing low sweet mandolin", and another which i can't remember the name. the "puritan sessions" cd, the two homer and jethro albums, "playin it straight", and "it ain't necessarily square", which you can find on one cd. don't forget "s'wonderful-four giants of swing" on flying fish records, and "back to back" with tiny moore.
not jazz standards, but my personal favorite jazz mando album is "flatbush waltz" by andy statman, which is on rounder, but i think it's only available on cassette.
there,s lots more, but that's what springs to mind right now. john

Be sure to check out some of the recommendations on Mandohack's Web site:

http://members.aol.com/teesch/Recordings.html

You will be able to get the list of songs contained on most of those albums by searching for the titles at Amazon or other Web sites like this one that sell CD's:

(BTW, I am not affiliated with either of these Web site links and have no financial interest in them)

One of my favorite jazz mandolin cuts ever is Andy Statmans version of Stardust on "Buellgrass". Andy also plays several other sensational tunes, and does some jazz comping on the mandolin like I had never heard before.

Amen, Gary- Andy's playing on that is other worldly- command of time and tone, expressive, deeply emotional, and funny!

Don Stiernberg's stuff is wonderful.
Tiny Moore's stuff w/ Bob Wills is amazing.
Paul Glasse is excellent.

I'm fixin' to do a jazz mando recording one of these days too http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Lately - I've been listening to a lot of Harmonious Wail. I have three of their CD's and am still amazed at the depth of understanding and skill set of this complete band ... favorite tune? Maybe - today, "Eat at Joes", "Swing Slow" and "Straighten Up and Fly Right". Tomorrow - who knows?
