View Full Version : What are your interests? Not in order

Keith Newell

I want to know if I'm weird or just have a varied range of interests. Post what your interests are and don't hold back....you got a couple then we are going to think you are strange because that really can't take up your whole day.....really?
Music
Books
Mandolin building/playing
CNC machining
Shooting....handguns and rifles.....mag capacity has no sway
Motorcycles
Fishing.....used to be big fish now it's panfish
Granddaughters
My dogs
my friends
beer
cigars
computer fun
.
.
not sure but I'm bound and determined to come up with something that makes me look cool....

I'll bite:

Music
~Listening to it
~Making it (okay, trying to make it)
~Reading about it
~Going places to hear it
Reading
Travel
Photography
Family activities
Dogs
Camping / outdoors
Movies
College football
Technology (involved more and more in all of the above, it seems)

As I grow older, I find I'm less concerned with looking cool, and more concerned with being myself. :)

My main interests are music, films, reading and photography. I like history, science, and Doctor Who and The Walking Dead. I like doing service work in my local and distant communities.

I play mandolin, OM, and Uke. I am learning a recorder as my son has it in school. I like hiking and the sound of the ocean. I enjoy cooking and eating. I'm the house scullery maid, vacuum operator and bathroom cleaner. I enjoy mowing the lawn with a push mower (small lot helps). I enjoy a good concert and really enjoy naps. I rock at being weird with my kids. I have a keen interest in my wife, whom I adore. I don't care a whit for most all sports.

I'm cool to all the right people and I'm uncool to the right ones (except to my tween daughter who generally thinks I'm uncool but loves me grudgingly anyway).

Short-scale tenor banjo in GDAE and mandolin playing.
Old-time, ITM, Scottish pipe tunes, actually alot of European folkdance music.
Jamming this music with fine Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma folks.
Vintage aluminum camper rehab, camping with aforementioned folks to jam.
Festivals in Winfield, Harrison, Ar. maybe a couple of others nearby with an old-time component.
Busking, literature, good old movies, good new movies, fishing cats and walleyes, hunting ring neck pheasants.
Work. I need to be good at what I do. I feel good about it. Good thing, I'll be at it until it's no longer physically possible, then I'll be broke.
Finding vintage camping stuff. One day my camp will look like a postcard from 1966.
First and foremost; I'd like to find a female old hippie musician with a happy disposition who likes to camp and has no need for wealth. Guitar, fiddle, banjo, dulcimer, bass...........makes little or no difference. Bass would be sweet. Two years now, tough going.

Oh, Mandolin Cafe should be in there somewhere, too.

Been there on tweens, they don't get much better unless motivated with $$. Walking Dead is awesome so is Sons of Anarchy. Lord of the rings and George RR Martin series. Frank Herbert stuff and if you listen to iTunes podcast stuff of Myke Bartllet and Mike Bennet the Underwood series ( best ever).
I'm not feeling so alone from finding other net members that have interests like mine.... :)

Walking Dead is awesome

I have actually been having Zombie nightmares from watching too many related shows/movies.

There is someone that walks by the back of the shop almost everyday. He drags one foot and every time I am back there and hear him, my first reaction is "ZOMBIES"! A split second later, I come to my senses. :)

In no particular order: Reading (fiction but particularly science fiction, fantasy, classic romance (think Georgette Heyer), mysteries and novels written before 1940), music (mandolin, recorder, occasionally flute and percussion, badly singing in the car on the way to work) and sessions and workshops (mostly Irish and classical), work, crossword puzzles, grocery shopping, cooking, woodworking/building, walking, family/friends, nature, some photography, science/astronomy/geology/technology/gadgets, movies, Dr. Who/Eureka/BBC's Sherlock/Castle/White Collar, gardening and once upon a time community theater that I may one day get back to when I retire. And playing solitaire on the computer and the occasional computer forum stuff.

- Mandolin
- 5 string banjo
- guitar, electric & acoustic
Being truly good at none of the above, started too old love it all the same though
- Repairing broken instruments
- Skeet Shooting (League competition level)
- General firearms nut
- I'm a Predator Hunter or I was, Divorce took my off road truck
- Growing my local Hummingbird population has become great fun
- Motorcycles, I went too fast for years, now I find joy in keeping my Shovelhead healthy, if you've had a shovelhead you know what I mean
- I loved my dogs, they are gone now and can't seem to get more, tired of burying my friends I guess
- Working around the house

I think we had a thread along these lines not so long ago. I recall mandolins, bicycles and scotch being the glue that bound many of us together.

Anyway, my main interests are my family (made up of my kids, my wife, and brother and my parents, who are still with us) my career (which keeps me very busy), music, reading (mostly genre stuff, like espionage, SF and mystery novels; I actually have a science fiction blog at http://blog.omphalosbookreviews.com/ though its been a while since I updated it), and travel. I have a wanderlust which I have never been able to slake, no matter how far or how long I go. In my earlier years I was known to disappear for years. I guess my own family put an end to that, but man I still feel the pull.

I am new to the mandolin and have to say I am concerned a bit by the responses so far.
These are folk instruments traditionally yet no one yet has mentioned
'horizontal folk dancing'
Is this something that mandolin players lose interest in over time?
Are mandolins part of an alien plot to stymie human procreative growth?
You can see my concern, especially since most who post here are men.

Measured in blood levels of dopamine and adrenaline, it cannot compete with session playing and skydiving.

Hi is it Nrand, yep, I think I may be one of the few ladies responding on this thread - so naturally my interest would not lie with fishing? <big smile> Interests include: jewelry design, acting, walks along the beaches of SA, and of course my hubby and dog and writing poetry and short stories. But to the mando I accidentally stumbled upon an interesting chord during practice yesterday, something you would use in jazz. However, it sparked in interesting composition in D minor in my head. So So let's just say my interest is creativity.

Well, dogs? definitely! they compete intensely with mandolining and in the end when the mandolin steals the first place on certain days, Black dog lies patiently at my feet in worship of the sound I am producing??? Hmmmm.
Wondered about the armadillo part.

Mandolin, mountain biking and bicycling, bikepacking, working out, environmental issues, anti-whaling, reading.....mostly science fiction, hiking, camping. I used to climb and kayak but not currently. I've also always enjoyed science and was seriously into astronomy when I was younger.

Family is not on the list because that goes without saying and not God as I've never had a religious bone in my body and have been a non-believer since I was very young.

Funny how you put out your list then read others lists and go "oh yeah that is one of my main interests" but forgot to put it on your main post. This shows you have so many that get dropped through the cracks so to speak and you are much more than the sum of your posts....
