I'm going to sell this mandolin and want to describe it in detail and I know this is not a factory piece. When I first got this mandolin some one here told me who made it but I now can not find that thread. Thanks in advance:mandosmiley:

It looks like an Allen Tailpiece (http://www.allenguitar.com/tpcs.htm)someone put a wooden overlay on. I've seen a few mandolins where that has been done.

That's Stephen Holst's handmade ebony tailpiece. IMHO one of the best things he has designed, which is saying something.
Is this mandolin made by Stephen?

That does look like a Holst tailpiece, which appears to be directly attached to the mandolin.

The first wooden tailpieces I saw on a mandolin were on Monteleone's Radio Flyers..........and then on his Grand Artist Delux models as on the blonde mando pictured. Then we have a Radio Flyer A model in Malibu Sunset finish. Note that these are suspended tailpieces, there is a wire that goes over a wooden block and then around the end pin, so it is suspended.

I saw that Neil Dean in VT was making something similar & bought a few that I had Lawrence Smart put on a dola/mando pair that I collaborated with Lawrence on, I drew the 2 point design myself, and of course was inspired by Monteleone. Lawrence makes his own now. IMO the sound from these suspended tailpieces is warmer with a lot of sustain.

Is there a builder's label in the mandolin?

If the mandolin is a Holst it will just have Steve's signature and serial number stamped. The Holst tail price itself is a great design.

The late John Zeidler created a nice pinned tailpiece with an Ebony surround (see photo).
John had told me he was asked to sell the tailpiece separately. He said that if people wanted his tailpiece, they could buy his mandolin.

It does look exactly like the tailpiece on my Holst mandolin, although mine appears to be made from a single piece of ebony whereas this one looks like 3 pieces glued together.

This mandolin has a label, which you can see part of in the bass F-hole. My Holst has no label, just a signature and a stamp on bare wood.

So how'd one of Stephen's tailpieces end up on a Morgan Monroe?

Cuppy, see all the people that have swapped the tailpiece to try to improve the sound..

IDK, may have been a DIY project. FWIW..
