I've decided to put my rare, vintage flat top. x-braced octave mandolin on ebay for those of you who might be interested. It's possibly a German made "Cid" instrument, but I'm not entirely sure. What I am sure of, is that this type of octave mando is exceedingly rare and it sounds beautiful (not that I'm really any good on the mando). Something about old wood...

You should just list this in the classifieds with the link there.

That is a gorgeous instrument, I have admired it when you posted it before. Do you know what the back and sides are made of? Birch or poplar, maybe?

Good question! I really don't know. I'm assuming it's a European instrument and the top is probably German (or "European") spruce. The back and sides are a mystery. The wood on the back has a lovely, almost hypnotic figure to it. Possibly Olive wood? I just don't know with any certainty.

PS. Thanks for the listing tip Jim, will do...

Maybe Olive, really hard to tell. This was the closest image of an Olive match I could find. Nice looking thing all around ! I bet it sounds great.

Good thought Dobe, but I've never seen olive large enough for this application. Certainly not quarter-sawn. Could be birch, sycamore, poplar, or linden, I'd guess.
