if im not mistaken i think you can get a higher end kentucky A-5 for right around that price range. actually i just checked to make sure, musicanfriend has the kentucky km-380s artist for $299. I have played kentucky mandos before and for the price they aren't to bad.

actually i think with that price you can do a little up grading...tailpiece, bridge, strings and you will have a pretty good A style mando. i had a kentucky km-675 F style mando and i put a radiused fingerboard, new ebony bridge and tailpiece and she sounds right good for what i doing at the time.

That's about what my used Mid-Misouri M-11 cost. That would be my suggestion, look for a good used instrument.

I have a very nice Gibson/Epiphone MM-30 with a pick up installed. Solid wood carved that I am listing on the cafe shortly. I can let it go for $300 plus shipping.

You can see mandoplyr's (Chris') work in the 'Arches mandolin' thread in the 'post a picture' area.

Strad-o-lin's can often be found in that price range. Good ones can have a real nice tone http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
