View Full Version : Can YouTube video links accept links to specific times?

Hi,

I love the embedded YoutTube videos in the MCafe forum posts. It's very easy to use and looks great.

But I've noticed that many folks post youtube links and then mention that the song or interesting part starts at a particular time.

You can easily link to a particular time in a full URL, such as:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ejpb-zKu1NI&t=1m8s

Would it be possible in some future enhancement to prompt for the start time of the video (maybe t=0m0s could be the default)?

This is just a suggestion...certainly not an issue or bug.

Best, Larry

Possible, yes, but I don't think anyone will use it. I'd estimate 75% of our members linking to YouTube don't know how to embed--in spite of written and video tutorials we've provided dozens of times-- and most of the rest don't do it correctly, which would be a requirement based on the entered parameters to get it to work. Plus, they'd have to know it's even possible which I'm guessing most don't.

Those instructions for embedding videos correctly for those that think I'm kidding:
Video tutorial (http://vimeo.com/33805937)
Written tutorial (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?73869-Embedding-YouTube-amp-Vimeo-Videos-Redux)

I'll look into it as I have time. Just don't see it being used and will create more questions than usefulness. In a perfect world every member would actually look at the bottom of pages where posts are made and click the BB Code is On (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode) link and see all of the custom and generic options available.

Fair enough...I'm sure you're correct. Probably less than 2% would ever use it. But I would! lol

Less :)

When was the last time you saw anyone do this trick below besides me which is documented in the BB Code? If I create it, you may change your title from Registered User to Embedding Evangelist!

Here's the problem with these things. Lots of parameters. My embedded MP3 was #1 so you have to change to #2 on yours which I've done in my reply. I explained that somewhere in a post now long buried somewhere. Saw no one was using it so never really followed up on it.

I found Scott's thread (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?78843-New-streaming-MP3-player-BB-code) on this.

Thanks Scott. I would prefer my title to be Embedding Entrepreneur.

OK, so the BB tag is: youtubestart which must be followed by the time you want started in seconds, so above, youtubestart=70. That's in brackets, then the video ID, then you close the tag with /youtubestart

Just testing in FireFox and assuming it works in other browsers. Can likely incorporate this into the regular YouTube tag as an option. That probably won't happen today though because I'm not going to be able to spend more time on this today due to holiday travel.

So, this directly below minus the spaces so the forum doesn't think it's real code:
[ youtubestart=70 ] 3eYIa9ZTCLQ [ /youtubestart ]

Now, go forth and part-way embed, my friends. I'll try to remember to look into adding this to the regular YouTube tag if possible. Wouldn't get too busy using it for a few days if possible because if I add it to the regular tag may remove this one which will hose any videos embedded in this fashion.

Scott: Just your mention of the link at BB Code is on alone is fascinating. Thanks!

Also, lot of information flying around here. I believe it's Internet Explorer that starts barfing if you embed more than two (or three) MP3s in a page so you want to avoid adding a lot of those. This in regard to the small MP3 player embedded above.

John, appears you've inserted an invalid video ID. Don't know where you got that but it's about 3X as long as most.

...

MP3s... need to be numbered consecutively as stated above. Not particularly easy. Also, because I host the software for this, the MP3 must reside on mandolincafe.net or mandolincafe.com in order to work. You're linking outside of the Cafe so won't work.

Just checked the original post on MP3 player (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?78843-New-streaming-MP3-player-BB-code) and you'll want to read that carefully.

When I click my mp3 test example above, it plays my mp3 hosted elsewhere quite well. Have I found a breach in security?

I'm one of the two percenters since I've read and watched the tutorials and my BB code is on. Never tried to embed mp3. That is neat but it's never come up on my end. Scott, you and your team are doing a great job here and I'm sure I speak on behalf of most everyone when I say that.
